TOKENS: A Play on the Plague:
David Schein is building a future for a full revival of his and Candacd Natvig English's monumental musical, TOKENS: A Play on the Plague. TOKENS, set in the Great Plague of London, with a cast of 60, took San Francisco by storm when AIDS/HIV was decimating the city. Now in the time of COVID it is even more relevant. TOKENS: A Play on the Plague: the illustrated Script
The Illustrated script of TOKENS, published by Fomite Press is now available through Amazon or by contacting David Schein at daschein@gmail.com. It is the script of the original cast production with illustrations taken from a video of a live performance shot in Theater Artaud in San Francisco in the Spring of 1985.
“ I am all admiration for the wonders of the show. . It is an opera with contrapuntal, polyrhythmic music, built on medieval and renaissance themes, and it is a ballet with vigorous, acrobatic, sometime brutish choreography. The dialog is full of wordplay, pithy images and verbal games that exploit vowels and consonants.” " – Bernard Weiner, San Francisco Chronicle.
"Brilliant, powerful theater." – Nancy Scott, San Francisco Examiner
"Anyone interested in theater should see it. It is magnificent." – A.J. Esta, Hollywood Dramalogue
"TOKENS' became a kind of stripping back to the essence of theater, a creation of art from the panorama of human experience." – Alan Rich, California Magazine.
Songs from TOKENS: In 2021 as the pandemic raged, David Schein was commissioned by the Demokratie Festival in Münster, Germany to present a stripped down version of "TOKENS: A Play on the Plague," featuring songs from the original large-scale production. In Songs from Tokens Schein references the COVID pandemic and also Plagues through the ages while performing the songs he wrote and arranged with Candace Natvig English for the original production. Songs from TOKENS is full of the pithy word play of the original while rife with new refections on the timelessness of plague and the darkness and light it shines on the human spirit.
